Seventeen-year-old Layla Amin lives in a United States "fifteen minutes into the future" where Islamophobia has become so rampant that there are burning of books by Muslim authors and curfews are imposed. Layla's college professor father has been removed from his job and her chiropractor mother's clinic has fewer and fewer clients.

And then the relocation authority comes for Layla and her parents. Their only crime is that they professed their faith on the census. So they are being sent to a camp, can pack only what they can carry and, of course, have to give up their phones.

Soon, they are on a train that will take them to the Owens Valley. From there, they board buses that take them farther into the desert.

The beginning of this story will feel uncomfortably familiar. Not only is it referencing our current political climate, but it also follows the path traveled by the Japanese-American families living on the Pacific coast in World War II. Right down to the fact that Layla and her family drive past Manzanar, which was the first Japanese internment camp to open during the war, on their way to their new camp.

I am very familiar with this event in history because my small community has the distinction of being the first place where the Japanese-Americans were removed from their homes. Layla and her family recreate their journey in many ways, including just how established the infrastructure of their removal to the camps is. There's a special train, buses, guards, numbers that identify your family and... at the end... there is a camp with "Mercury Homes"-- RVs-- instead of tar paper shacks but still organized into blocks around a mess hall.

And, just like the camps from 50 years ago, there is dust. Always dust.

There is no familiar historical script for Amin to follow once she has her characters at the camp, which is yet another uncomfortable place for the reader to be. We will not be watching our characters live in a camp until the war is over, because there is no declared war that we are dealing with here and we have no idea what the resolution will be.

The cover art has Layla wearing a baseball cap with the word "RESIST" on it and that is what she does, in spite of her parent's surprising hope that she will go along with camp administration's plans and goals. She is aided by an unlikely partner, one of the guards who's interest in helping her demonstrates that there are many others outside of the camp that are working to destroy the system from within,

There are many reasons why I think that this novel is going to be popular with my students. Layla is a strong heroine, the action is fast-paced and there is much to talk about in terms of comparing with history and with today as well.

I Should Have Honor by Khalida Brohi.

This is a slim book with a great amount of power. Khalida Brohi is a Pakistani woman who grew up in a tribal village where family and tradition are valued and a family's honor is upheld above all, even to the point of death. While still a young girl, she discovers that her favorite cousin is killed after she disgraces the family by running away with the boy that she loves.

It is a called an honor killing.

Khalida's entire life is changed by this event. As she grows older, stopping this practice will become her one defining goal. But she realizes that trying to attack this challenge directly won't work in her male-dominated society so she has to adopt a much more nuanced approach.

Her strategy is inspired by her father, who was an early supporter of her access to education and has held the role of journalist as well as community organizer. It involves a great deal of talking and finding ways to empower women so that they are seen as valuable and essential. She succeeds in building programs that seem to carry on well without her direct oversight and you can see her evolving into a inspiring entrepreneur who helps indigenous women capitalize on their cultural traditions. The embroidery on the cover celebrates this.

But eliminating the practice of honor killings remains the focus of her work and doing that is quite dangerous. Her family rightly fears for her life as well as their own and there is definitely a moment where her father becomes less supportive of her work. After some times, she realizes that it is protective gesture.

What Khalida Brohi does well in telling her story is to help the reader understand the extreme societal pressures that she and her family are under. It is also abundantly clear just how much pride she has in her Pakistani culture. There are times when the story gets bogged down with the many acronyms that represent the NGO (non-governmental organization) world in Pakistan but that is also a reality that Brohi has to work with.

I bought one copy for my library when the book first came out and I am the third reader that it has had. The cover and Brohi's compelling story sold itself from my table of new book reads. The bright yellow cover helps it stand out. Readers who enjoyed I Am Malala will definitely find this I Should Have Honor an engaging and valuable read.

<span style="color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif;">Birthdays! They're a time to feel celebrated and loved, especially if you share your birthday day with one of your besties from childhood. And that's the way it is for Morgan and Eric.
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif;">

<span style="color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif;">Here are two kids who <span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">have been a part of each other’s childhoods ever since their parents gave birth to them on the same day and at the same hospital during a freak September blizzard. <span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">Their friendship gets even more solid during years of learning to play football together and also through family tragedies like the death of Morgan’s mom.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">On the birthday day right before they start middle school, Morgan considers letting Eric know a deeply held secret. Morgan is questioning his gender.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">The reader gets to check in with during their next birthdays, which is a great way to allow time to move quickly. We will get to see Morgan and Eric all the way through high school and beyond. Their years are filled with major changes that test their friendship. But they always seem to find a way to spend at least a part of their birthday day together.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">I read this in one evening because Morgan’s story is so compelling. Morgan’s father and community make it very difficult to live her truth. There is one chapter closer to the end that is particularly heartbreaking as Morgan attempts to live up to community and family expectations.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">

<span style="color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif;">This is Meredith Russo's next novel after her excellent If I Was Your Girl.
Dara's life after high school plan is to play professional tennis and she has the skill and the coaching to achieve this goal. What she doesn't have is a mother who believes in her life path and the money to support her while she does this.

She also does not have a passport to get her to the Canadian tournament that she needs to start getting noticed for her abilities. So she asks her mom for her birth certificate. Her mom insists that it has been lost and refuses to talk about it any further.

So Dara does what any thwarted 18-year-old would do. She tears the house apart, eventually finding the lock box under her mom's bed, the key to the lock box, and--finally-the certificate.

Which does not have her actual name on it. More intriguingly, it also doesn't have the right parent names either.

Dara spends a few hours thinking that she was abducted at birth before her mom comes home. When confronted, she tells the truth. Her mom is actually her biological father. She transitioned after Dara was born.

Dara is rocked to the core by this news. When she learns that she also has a set of grandparents that she has never known, she decides that she is going on a road trip to find them. She takes along her childhood best friend and neighbor.

At some point in time, her mom starts to send her emails explaining the whole story from the very beginning. These two story lines start to link up as Dara finds her lost family and starts to realize what they may be able to do for her.

Dara's identity struggles and anger towards her mother is honest and riveting.

NOTE: I wrote this because my third grade son kept on asking me questions that I couldn't answer! And there isn't really that much that is readable about Groundhog's Day on the Web. The above links are the best two that I could find. If you are a teacher or a parent who is homeschooling their family, I have a three-page activity worksheet that goes along with this groundhog interview. It includes a cultural tie-in and even some science. Take a look at it on my Teachers Pay Teachers Web store -- Interview with a Groundhog - Student Activity WorksheetKathleenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10003167476026166735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156387847170712015.post-36326863825838700542016-12-31T13:13:00.002-08:002016-12-31T13:13:48.146-08:00Happy New Year - Character education resolutions for students! Happy 2017! I have revised one of my favorite New Year´s Resolutions lesson plans that I first created way back in 2012.

My high school library is in a very modern and new building. Most of our walls are made of glass. The ones that aren't made of glass are made of exposed concrete. It is gorgeous and also the students find it comfortable but I often have trouble figuring out ways to make the look a little less basic. I find it challenging to figure out ways to decorate that don't look out of place and actually harmonize with the space.

This year, I´m using these shelf talkers to give me and my students a chance to share book reviews with the students who walk around my library. It is called TALKING SHELVES. They are easy to print out and use! You can download them from my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

This one may have claimed over 9,000 lives. Yet we never hear about this significant tragedy with its loss of life.

It was the Wilhelm Gustloff, which went down in the Baltic Sea on January 30, 1945. On board were German soldiers as well as civilians who were escaping from the Soviet Army as they marched across Lithuania and East Prussia.

Ruta Sepetys has created a novel that will bring this event out of relative obscurity. It is called Salt to the Sea. In this novel, there are four main characters and their stories are told together in alternating short chapters. Joana is a Lithuanian woman who has been trained as a nurse. She has a family connection to the characters in Sepetys other historical fiction story, which is called Between Shades of Gray. Florian is East Prussian and has been working as a apprentice to the art conservator in Konigsberg and is carrying something in his pack that he will not let out of his sight. Emilia is a young Polish girl with a secret of her own. And Alfred is a German youth who has been drafted very late in the war to serve as a sailor in the Kriegsmarine. He dreams of glory that is unlikely to come his way.

This is such an important and interesting book and it deserves to be studied and enjoyed. So I've created a novel study that might help teachers and homeschoolers to work with this book.

-- A character tracker that invites students to reflect upon the three different types of literary conflict and potentially write an essay sharing their findings,

-- An information skills lesson that helps students to identify an author's purpose in publishing Web information,

-- Discussion or essay questions

It also has a Google Earth Tour Builder lesson that brings to life the journey of these four characters. You can access this Tour Builder for free.

Chronicling the end of World War II and a massive catastrophe that has been overlooked in history, this story follows four individuals and some of their companions as they band together in the hopes of surviving and reaching safety. Florian is a Prussian with a secret that he keeps in his pack, Joana is a Lithuanian girl who has become a nurse, Emilia is a Polish girl who is carrying secrets of her own and Alfred is a German sailor who has been drafted very late in the war.

I picked up this book after one of my students said that it made her cry and I decided that it was exactly what I needed to enjoy on a rainy day in May. It didn't disappoint. All the characters are real and you will feel for their struggles. The cover art of empty life preservers floating on a choppy sea makes you realize that many of them are likely doomed in some way or another.

In the end, it is a hopeful book that I was glad to have read.
Senior debater and valedictorian-to-be Sammie discovers that she has a rare genetic disease called Niemann-Pick and that she is likely to develop systems of dementia, mental retardation, seizures and --eventually-- death. This is completely against Sammie's plans of college at NYU after graduation and an eventual career as a lawyer. Even as she struggles against the diagnosis, she decides to create a memory book, which she writes for her future self as a way to relate what is important. She types the memory book onto a laptop and it becomes a diary of how the disease tries to break her and how she attempts to fight back.

In her corner, she has her mom and dad, three younger siblings, a childhood best friend who she has grown apart from in high school, and a crush that has recently returned to her small town in New Hampshire from New York City. She also has a poster of feminist icons in her room who she selects to help her focus on her goal of beating this disease.

The reader gets clues from her parents, local doctor and Mayo Clinic specialist on speakerphone that Sammie is not going to beat this and that at some point she is going to have to accept this as well.

By this time, I was expecting to go through the whole emotional process of Sammie turning into a drooling vegetable, stuck in a hospital bed by the end of the book. What I didn't expect was just how much Sammie would continue and how her personality would evolve throughout the book. Very occasionally, Sammie gives control of the keyboard over to another character so you get some outside perspective on her as well.

Readers who like very real stories about rare medical situations like Last Leaves Falling by Sarah Benwell, None of the Aboveby Gregorio and Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon will like this book. This book could easily be considered a downer and I could see readers shying away from it because it seems like it would be too sad. I think that this would be a mistake. The book has some really funny points and there's definitely some good romantic moments in it as well.

I assumed the wrong thing from the cover of this book. I thought that it would be a modern mystery thriller with a main character unearthing dead bodies in the middle of the night. I was so wrong. It's a Victorian mystery thriller with a weathly female main character who unearths dead bodies in the middle of the night and also falls in love with an unsuitable boy who is not in her high society world and visits a lot of inappropriate places in New York City without her mother knowing.

Josephine is the girl and her father has recently been found dead from a gunshot wound. The family initially believes that he committed suicide but Jo soon learns the truth from a young medical student who works at the morgue and has started to learn forensic science. That might be the best part of the whole book; when he starts to describe bodies in the morgue using forensic science techniques.

Anyway, I love murder mysteries set in Victorian times and this one was fully entertaining, if pretty predictable. I think that fans of romance and historical fiction will like this one a great deal. I appreciated the fact that it had some gritty elements to it. There's even an insane asylum called "Darkbriar" because nothing is scarier than being locked up in an insane asylum when you are still in your right mind.
I wrote about it in my column on VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) Electronic Eye August 2016.Kathleenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10003167476026166735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156387847170712015.post-37689819436702251982016-07-28T12:53:00.001-07:002016-07-28T13:02:37.322-07:00Fine Motor Skills - Dots Around the Country

My son and I are continuing to work on his handwriting skills this summer and we've created this tracing workbook that features sights from all of the 50 United States! We are calling it "Dots Around the Country" since there are dots embedded into each one of the pictures. We use a metallic Sharpie marker to complete each dot picture as well as the handwriting ruled title for each. There is also a small caption at the bottom of each picture that describes it in some way.

It's a rather simple idea but my son and I have not found nearly enough tracing practice out there on the World Wide Web and very little that appeals to him as an eight-year-old getting ready for third grade. He loves travel and helped me choose the locations!
Long

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have been on an Amelia Earhart kick lately ever since I read Amelia Lost by Candace Fleming. Here I thought that I had learned everything that there was to know about this brilliant flyer by reading lots of biographies of her as a child. She is definitely a person that people use with children to celebrate all kinds of different values.

But Candace Fleming and also the Longs' book paints a somewhat different picture and more complex picture of the woman. After reading both, there is little doubt in my mind that she was incredibly brave and an amazing risk taker and definitely knew how to fly a plane long distances. One of the more challenging aspects of long distance flying was figuring out how to make the fuel last and there were things that a pilot could do to "lean" the mixture and she seemed quite adept at that.

This book by Marie K. Long and Elgen Long, who was a former flyer who often had to fly over Howland Island when he was in the Navy, reveals something that I think is shocking.

She didn't know Morse code. And her navigator didn't either!

Maybe that isn't so shocking to you. After all, Earhart had a radio and did communicate with ground radio stations using her voice almost all the way around the world. But here's the problem. The Itasca, which was the Naval ship tasked with helping her to find and land on Howland Island, her two-mile wide Pacific Island refueling stop, assumed that she did and they had a plan to help her use her radio detection finder to locate it using a Morse code frequency. Even days after she disappeared, many people in the Navy still tried to communicate with her using Morse code.

In this book, Elgen and Marie Long have come up with a solution to the mystery of Amelia's disappearance that makes sense to them based on what they know about her radio, her fuel reserves, and the weather on that day and they make a very compelling scientific argument about where we can find Amelia today.

The book was published several years ago and, so far, no one seems to have taken them up on looking for her in the place where her plane might be.

The book was sometimes a bit of a slog because of the amount of technical information that has to be shared in order for the final solution to make sense but I was immersed in it, especially learning more about how challenging it was to attempt to fly in and out of all the different countries that she had to visit. There were times when she had to be concerned with outrunning a typhoon or how soggy a landing strip was. There were times when she had to be concerned with how to get a part to fix her plane before she could take off again.

Adventurous and will shine a light on the real Amelia Earhart, who might be a bit different from the Earhart that we think we know.

My son is headed into the third grade but his handwriting isn't. At the beginning of the summer, he and I agreed that we would work on his handwriting. But it has been hard to motivate him to work on it. I've been trying to help him by creating motivating activities for him to complete including a writing journal, cutting exercises and even tracing. I'm making my efforts available on my Teachers Pay Teachers web store.

Here's what we've been working on so far!

SUMMER WRITING JOURNAL - It's all about ME!

I wanted to create a summer writing journal that was handwriting ruled but also had prompts that I felt would engage my son as we moved through the summer. This 33 page collection has opportunities for him to talk about his pets, his neighborhood and his favorite movies and music of the summer. We both agreed that personalizing the look of each journal for different users would make kids more likely to want to write in them So we came up with four different themes: Galaxy, Grass, Wood and DISCO!

There are additional pages in the back for both different prompts and also REVISING some entries along the way.
My son's grandparents and cousins are visiting Paris this summer and he wanted to know more about the city where they were visiting. So we created this fun way to learn more about the Parisian attractions in this activity which is mainly about cutting, a little bit about folding, and a tiny bit about how to use the key of a map. As you can see from the picture above, I've used some photographs of tourist destinations in Paris and have added cutting lines to it. My son has been cutting them out and then folding them so that they pop-up from the map that we've downloaded.

I had a fun time creating "Cut and Fold : Paris" because it gave me a chance to research the ten locations that I featured in his pop-up map so that we could talk about them as he was cutting. I've added a brief explanation of why each location is so important!

I had so much fun, I might just have to complete another one on another major city.Kathleenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10003167476026166735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156387847170712015.post-17419327453133916012016-05-23T15:12:00.000-07:002016-05-23T15:12:52.135-07:00Genre fiction for LGBT-Q young adults -- Not just reading from the Rainbow listI'm returning to a high school library this year and one of the things that I wanted to do was to increase the number of LGBT-Q titles available for students. So I wrote a small grant and won it and then went to my student LGBT-Q affinity group and asked for help. I thought that we'd just wind up pulling from the ALA's Rainbow List.

The president is a big reader and her biggest frustration was that so much of what is available is geared towards the "coming out" stories. She's a reader of fantasy and mystery and sci-fi and just wanted to be able to read books with diverse characters in them.

So the public librarian, local bookstore buyer and I made it our mission to find more good genre fiction. Malinda Lo, author and blogger (and many other things) was particularly useful. Here is part 5 of her five part series on avoiding the LGBT-Q stereotypes in YA fiction.

And here are two books (one is Lo's Cinderella variant!) that I bought and enjoyed recently!

Ash by Malinda Lo

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A Cinderella tale with a sweet and different ending. Any YA who is into fairy tale variants will love this one. Ash is our unhappy Cinderella who is not chasing after the prince but her step sister definitely is. He will choose to marry someone before the year is out and Ana is determined that it should be her.

Ash's own life is complicated by the fact that a fairy named Sidhean may have claimed her for his own. Meanwhile she finds the King's lead huntress, Kaisa, to be fascinating. In this Kingdom, the lead hunter is always a woman but that seems to be the only way in which the kingdom departs from the regular fairy tale stereotypes.

I'm going to make sure that I read more Malinda Lo. Very satisfying.

Unbecoming by Jenny Downham

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It all begins when Katie's mum is called to the hospital to pick up a grandmother that Katie has never met. There's a reason why grandmother Mary and mother Caroline are estranged and it has a lot to do with family secrets that are starting to unravel.

But Mary is suffering from dementia and her secrets are locked away in a mind that is beginning to fail her. Mom and Katie have secrets of their own. Katie has just tried to kiss her best friend and the girl is no longer talking to her because of it. Does Katie like girls? She's not so sure.

All three storylines weave together in a complicated way. All three women are sympathetic even though they aren't always kind to one another. The secrets kept me guessing and that made the reading move fast.
Richard Snyder is presenting on Digital Citizenship, which he defines as how we "access, use, and share information" and I'm spending some time reflecting on how I use social media in my library and also attempt to model good digital citizenship with my students.

Here is the conference WIKI

Anyone else at the Teacher-Librarian Summit blogging about the day?''

Great ideas from the presenters:

I completely agree that you should definitely plan for your formal Web presence. And it is an excellent point to label your social media channel as an "unofficial channel" unless you are using an official channel and that you should be mindful about whether or not you actually plan on updating your social media channel.

How interesting to create a knowledge rating chart with words like "full text" and Boolean and have them rate their knowledge level (1 to 3) as well as the definition from their own words. This is from Barbara Soltzenburg from Jackson High School. Great idea for student self assessment! Pre and post tests.

And now we are on to INFOGRAPHICS! I want to find an easy way to have my students create easy infographics. Will be looking at tools about this next. Here's one link that I'm experiencing: http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/infographic-tools/ and Kathy Schrock's Infographics page. ''

This is an infographic that I tried to make on the fly using the tool called Infogr.am. I was trying to see how easy it would be for a student to create an infographic on their Common Core writing prompt persuasive essays.

On to "Library of Congress" resources about Kathy Dorr -- "How do we help students be ethical users of resources when everything has been blocked?" Always a great point to make.

Beth Clothier is doing a great job talking about Digital Navigators. Great ideas and an excellent use of PowToons.

So what have I done in terms of connecting with students on social media in my TWEENER (5th-6th grade) school and teaching them about digital citizenship?

Edmodo: Last year I began an experiment hosting a book chat for interested readers on this sheltered social networking site. We had teachers help identify students and did about 20 minutes of face-to-face instruction on Edmodo and then most other interactions online. I had about a core of 20 students who stuck with me throughout the year and they didn't just talk about books but also about what they were doing on their weekends and after school. They really loved it when they were able to "meet up" while talking, which I should have anticipated. For my part, I created different "theme" weeks and created "assignments" that highlighted new books (heavy use of book trailers and author Web sites). There were survey questions that I put together to allow them to share their interests (Harry Potter vs. Percy Jackson?) and other discussion questions. Through it all, when kids said the wrong thing, I tried to help them out both online ("I'm deleting your post when you called that other kid "weird," -- Do you agree?) and then I followed up with them face-to-face. IT WAS WONDERFUL. IT WAS EXHAUSTING. I pulled back from it this year because I wasn't sure if I could sustain it for this whole year and also I had hoped that more teachers would have started using Edmodo by now so that this would just seem to be an additional channel that students had access to.

Common Sense Media's "Digital Passport." I have a "once every three weeks" class with a group of students and we have used this digital citizenship collection of lessons to shape the first half of our school year together. The videos and game modules usually take about 15 minutes to run through and usually sparks some questions for students. Since our class is only 30 minutes long, it seemed like the perfect amount of content.

Tara Phethean, librarian in Upstate New York, has hit upon a great concept with her new blog, which is called "Unshelfish Librarians." She's featuring librarians doing good stuff and put me up on her blog this month.

MY STORY ABOUT WINNING THIS YEAR'S "I Love My Librarian Award!"

On November 19th, I was enjoying my fifth year leading my annual all school reading program called "Sakai Reads" when I received an interesting message on my voice mail. Would I please return the call of Maureen Sullivan, Past President of the American Library Association???

Uhhhh... sure!!!

I found a free moment and, since our building has cellular dead spots, I ran out into the parking lot in front of our building. From her I found out that I was one of ten winners of the New York Times / Carnegie Corporation's "I Love My Librarian" award.

I burst into tears.

While I knew that one of my fabulous para-educator colleagues had been nominating me for the last three years, I never ever thought that I would win. It was humbling enough to know that she thought well of me and found enough other kids and teachers that thought the same.

After finishing my call with Maureen Sullivan, I ran back inside because the next thing on the schedule for that busy day was to host a pizza party for a group of 6th graders who had all read Edward Bloor's Tangerine. We had a great time talking about that book and others and the news started to sink in:

It is unheard of to love what you're doing, feel good about your contribution... and then get recognized for the work that you do. It is like being struck by lightning.

The weeks that followed were a blur of quietly planning to go to New York with so many people helping me financially to buy plane tickets for myself and my son. My husband used his frequent flier miles to get there and someone else gifted me with two nights at a hotel. I was asked to keep the news quiet, which was hard to do! I eventually told all the teachers at my school.

The trip to NYC was amazing. Having once been a New Yorker, I had a great time sharing my love of the city with my son and husband and visiting old friends.

Meeting the other honorees was very humbling as well. There are so many ways to define what it means to be a librarian and I think that there was an amazing mix of innovative ideas paired with the very traditional notion of library service: who is it that is benefiting from your work? Is it the college undergrad who gets to touch a 500 year-old book for the first time and finds himself turned on to history? Harold M. Forbes is responsible for this.

Is it the high school kids who lost their rural bus service to their homes and spend their time every afternoon in the public library in their small community where they are loved and valued to the point where one in their midst wrote a very eloquent letter for their public librarian -- Holly Camino?

Those are only two of the amazing librarians that I was able to talk to.

But what has happened since returning to the Island has been even more exciting. There was a big banner in the front of my library and my students had taken turns signing it. There was an even bigger banner in a central location of our island, which is called the "Roundabout." There was an article in the Bainbridge Review in the Kitsap Sun and on the front of my school district's Web site.

For the two days before we went on winter break, I would walk into a classroom and the kids would break into spontaneous applause. I went on our morning broadcast system on the first day back and I hope that they heard what I said to them. I don't always get it right ALL the time, especially in terms of finding just the right book for them. BUT I always want to get it right. And I won't give up on my efforts to help them.

For the last month and a half I've had a little bit of celebrity on my small island, with parents who's kids have passed through my school coming up to me in the store to congratulate me and to tell me that it is well deserved. I was at our Foundation Auction last night and someone came up to say how proud they were of me. While I'm still having trouble knowing what to say (I'm a very private person, actually!), I am exceptionally grateful that I've made people on my island proud.
Tomorrow, some of the technology people from my district will be meeting to talk about Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety to revisit our efforts on these two fronts in the last two years.

So I am finally listening to an awesome Blackboard Collaborate session with Cyberbullying guru Bill Belsey. A link to it can currently be found on the DigiFoot Wiki as a part of the 6 week MOOC course that ends tomorrow. Bill Belsey is an educator who became concerned with the problem of bullying and.founded Bullying.org as a way of allowing students to share their experiences. An off-shoot of this Web site is Cyberbullying.org.

Some of the things that I picked up from this very pragmatic 8th grade teacher are that most cyberbullying happens away from school but that schools and teachers wind up picking up many of the pieces after a cyberbullying incident has happened. Kids often normalize this bullying by calling it just regular teen drama.

He admits that the solution is not easy and that he feels that the key is to focus on prevention. Helping kids realize that protecting themselves is their job. He suggests reminding them not to share their passwords and private information and to use netiquette.

Another point that he made is that teachers can't plan for the technology because that will always be changing.

All good points.

This year I'm hoping to continue to refine our efforts to help students to be mindful of their own digital behavior. I'm planning on talking about them about what they want their "online brand" to look like. I'm hoping to use both popular company brands (like Nike and Coca-Cola) as well as famous people (like Justin Bieber) to draw some interesting connections about online reputations.

I'm hoping to help students reflect on their digital footprint by creating some sort of infographic that shows where they've left a trail online. I'm thinking of using a word cloud generator like Wordle or Tagxedo to help us do that.

I'd love to help teachers give our intermediate students a chance to use social media in a more sheltered way. This could be through using Moodle more effectively in the classroom or exploring the use of Edmoto.

It's going to be a good year.

Here I am at the virtual opening session of 3D Game Lab Teacher Camp listening to Shallow, one of the founders, talk about how quest-based learning will re-invent education.

A few of us learned how to fly on that day. I completed a lot of quests and tried to learn how to play Minecraft.

And I'm continuing on with week 5 of #DigiFoot12! This MOOC is on Week 5 and celebrates student voices on the Web. Our homework was to find a student blog, comment on it and tweet about it. I found UK student Veg's "Never Seconds" blog on Blogspot.com

She started her blog in order to give photos and reviews of her school's "dinners." Intriguingly, her school attempted to shut down her blog, which has lead to greater notoriety. Since then, other students have been e-mailing her pictures and information about their own lunches. Her latest post was in August and featured a very attractive Bento Box.

Imitaz Mujeed's talk earlier this week about his own path towards entrepreneurship has stuck with me and I've been musing on it ever since. He found what he was passionate about and had the abilities to make his goals a reality. I wish to help support all of my students towards their goal but I sometimes wonder if self starters like Imitaz just need school to move out of their way. I think that its great when a teacher can figure out how to best support very capable students so that they get the help that they need and the time to pursue their own path.

I was thrilled to be mentioned in Verena's daily #Digifoot12 newsletter! Thanks Verena!!!
It is in beta right now and I've joined the beta along with two colleagues at my school. Part of learning how to set up quests is to be reflective on helping students to think about their online reputation. Here's one video that the creators of this initial quest suggested that we watch.
Despite the fact that I front load my student's school year with activities that use their evaluation skills to identify the "joke" Web site, I have to continually remind them as they are searching throughout the year.

I'll be honest, I'm not so sure how much using fake Web sites helps in the end but I also have my favorites that I like to share with kids for a fun activity for a 5th grade library bootcamp, if nothing else.

My absolute favorite is the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus. Google It if you haven't about this amazing cephalopod!!! It is highly endangered because of habitat loss around the Pacific Northwest. Since my students live in the Pacific Northwest, we always have at least one kid who admits to seeing one in their back yard.

Using the Tree Octopus Web site with my kids as a joke at the beginning of school gives me the opportunity to establish a code word with kids. For the rest of their time with me, when I'm looking at a Web site with them that I don't like... I'll ask them if they think that it looks like "tree octopus" information!!!Kathleenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10003167476026166735noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156387847170712015.post-70354091726017547612012-07-31T09:22:00.002-07:002012-07-31T09:24:50.958-07:00#DigiFoot12 -- Digital CitizenshipI'm trying to catch up on my #DigiFoot12 MOOC class. We are starting week 5. So I'm listening to Scott Monahan's Blackboard Collaborate recording from Week 3 of the #DigiFoot12 class. Here's the direct link to the activities on the Wikispace.

Here are my two thoughts:

I like the idea of having "sheltered spaces" where students can practice their digital citizenship skills, especially when students are young. I work with 5th and 6th grade students. I think that if teachers can help students use more open social media outlets in a group or anonymous way. I liked the idea of having students use Twitter on a class account instead of every student needing their own Twitter account.

I like the idea of creating Google Alerts to see in what ways your name is out there. I started my own Google Alert to see how it works as a way of monitoring my own digital footprint.

Two places that I want to go back to and explore more is linoit.com and Kidblog.com

One person that I want to read more from is Danah Boyd.

One book that I want to read is:

Hanging Out, Messing Around and Geeking Out Mizuko Ito
